Arbor Day in the print industry means more than just appreciating the beauty of trees. It is a reminder to be thankful for our most important resource!  In an industry that relies on trees to sustain itself, the world of print has many thanks to give to trees.  While most people celebrate Arbor Day by going out of their way to avoid anything made out of paper, we want to remind you what paper products do for the world…and its trees!

Have you ever wondered what would happen if paper production stopped all together?  You might envision trees as far as the eye can see - miles of peaceful, pristine forests. But today’s world focuses on constant progress and growth.  Without the demand of forests for paper production, trees would eventually be cleared out for other uses such as farming, urban sprawl and livestock grazing. Did you know that between 1850 and 1910, we lost one third of our forests to agricultural development?  The mid-west was once covered in sprawling forests before it was dominated by crop fields.  However, trees harvested for paper products are replanted to keep American forests alive and help replenish our clean air.

At CNPP, our mission is to help people become responsible paper consumers.  Look for certifications like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI), and the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).  These labels ensure that paper has been harvested responsibly and trees properly replanted.  Materials that are CNPP approved (printed carbon neutral) are even more environmentally friendly.  There are so many ways to enjoy and use paper…the key is to be responsible!   Always remember to recycle and use recycled products as much as possible. And don’t forget to hug a tree this Arbor Day!
